Swim Lessons - Ages 5 and Up

SwimAmerica is the state of the art learn to swim program today. This goal-driven program was developed by the United States Swim Coaches Association, the same people who brought you the coaches of the USA Olympic Swimming team. We don't teach lessons. We teach PEOPLE HOW TO SWIM. After all, learning to swim is a LIFETIME GIFT that can save your child's life. Our goal is to teach your child to swim for health, safety, fun and fitness. Children must be at least 5 years old to start the SwimAmerica station progression.

How do I know if my child needs swim lessons?
School age children need swim lessons to learn to swim on top of the water. Underwater swimming cannot save their lives! Children tire quickly underwater, and trying to sustain underwater swimming may even cause a drowning. Learning proper technique with proper air exchange will help your child build confidence in the water and may save his or her life.

How long will it take my child to learn-to-swim?
This depends on your child's age and level of fitness. Older children tend to learn more quickly and most can learn-to-swim 2 or more strokes in 20 or so lessons. SwimAmerica doesn't consider someone a swimmer until they pass Station 10.

How do I know what station my child belongs in?

The advancement goals for each station are very clear cut. If your child can complete the advancement goals for a specific station then sign your child up for the first station that they cannot complete all advancement goals. Please contact the aquatics department if you're not sure which class is right for your child, 751-4161 or 751-4141.

Advancement Goals:
Station 1 - 10 relaxed bobs. This is a beginner station for children 5 and older who have never taken swim lessons and will not put their face in the water.
Station 2 - Front and back glide and recover - 5 seconds. This station is for children who feel comfortable putting their heads underwater but cannot yet float.
Station 3 - Front and back kick 15 ft. This station is for children who can float on their front and on their back, but have not yet learned kicking.
Station 4 - Side-glide-kick 20 ft, crawl stroke 20 ft (no breathing). This station is for children who have learned to float with a kick on their front and backs.
Station 5 - Crawl stroke with breathing. This station is for children who have learned to do crawl stroke but have not yet learned breathing.
Station 6 - Freestyle 25 yds, backstroke 30 ft, tread water for 1 minute. This station is for children who have learned freestyle with proper breathing.
Stroke School - Stroke School is designed for the swimmer who is looking for a longer, more challenging lesson. It's a great class to refine your strokes and build endurance. Stroke school will cover the skills from Station 7 through 10. To be placed in Stroke School children must be evaluated by a SwimAmerica staff or have already passed Station 6.
Station 7 - Freestyle 50 yds, backstroke 25 yds, kick breaststroke 20 ft
Station 8 - Freestyle 100 yds, breaststroke 25 yds, butterfly 30 ft
Station 9 - Freestyle 200 yds, butterfly 25 yds, breaststroke 50 yds, elementary backstroke 50 yds, sidestroke 50 yds
Station 10 - Freestyle 300 yds, backstroke 100 yds, individual medley 100 yds
