Recreational Volleyball League - Rules

Recreational Volleyball League Procedures

UPDATED 9/15/05

Check-In & Team Rosters:
All non-members will be entered into the computer check-in system and must check in with the front desk when entering the facility. Each player must check-in with The Summit league coordinator each game before play can start. Each team roster will be checked before each game to ensure that all players on the court are on that team roster and are registered league players. If a team chooses to play with players who are not on their team roster, it will be recorded as a forfeit before the game starts, unless the other team agrees to it. All league participants must sign a liability waiver before they may play.
Gym Shoes:
All players must have clean gym shoes to play in the gymnasium. If for any reason, the shoes of a player are inadequate, the league coordinator will ask the player to play in socks or bare feet.
Substitutes:
Each team may substitute players from their team during the game. The substitution can only be made just before the serve, therefore, only the team that is serving can make a substitution. If your team is short players, you may substitute with registered league players from other teams with the consent of your opposing team. Players may also be added to your team roster after the season starts but not during the tournament. To play in the tournament, players must play at least in one (1) game during the season.
Non-Members:
Players who are not members of The Summit are not allowed to use other parts of The Summit facility before, during or after the scheduled games. The league fee allows non-member players to use the locker rooms before and after the games and to use the gymnasium only during the scheduled games. Non-members may borrow a locker card and use a locker.
Forfeit:
If a team is short of players, it will be determined before the game starts if it will be recorded as a forfeit. If the game will be recorded as a forfeit, a “pick-up” game can be played in its place. A team can play with as little as 2 people and still be recorded as an official game as long as those people are on the team roster.
Games Start On Time:
All games will start on time (top of the hour). If either team does not show up within 10 minutes after the hour, the late team will forfeit.
Official Clock:
The official clock for all games is the large scoreboard clock on the wall of the gymnasium.
Inappropriate Behavior:
Any behavior deemed inappropriate in any way by the league coordinator or any Summit staff will result in immediate ejection from the game and possible ejection from the league with no refund. Players will be ejected for fighting, swearing, and arguing with the league coordinator or any Summit staff or any type of inappropriate behavior. It is O.K. to ask the league coordinator a question for clarification but any excessive arguing with the league coordinator may result in immediate ejection. The league coordinator may make decisions regarding ejection from the league.
Reminders:
  • Server must call scores loudly so everyone can hear before they serve. This will help all the players know the ball is in play and keep accurate track of the scores. If the server neglects to call the score, opposing team may request a re-serve.
  • Scores from each game will need to be recorded on the nightly game sheet, which will be on a clipboard on the benches.
  • Pick up any messes on the benches before you leave, please.
  • Team captains are responsible to ensure that their team knows the rules and the schedule.
  • Please feel free to contact Kevin if you have any questions, comments, suggestions or concerns. Phone: 751-4133.
BE FAIR AND HAVE FUN!!!!!

Recreational Volleyball League Rules

Governing Rules:
Official United States Volleyball Association Indoor 6 player rules will be followed
Game Format:
Games will utilize rally scoring; whereby the team that wins the rally will be awarded a point. Serves that touch the net and pass over into the opponent’s court is legal in rally scoring play. The team that wins the best of three games wins a match. The team which first scores 25 points with minimum lead of two points wins a game. A deciding game (third game) is won by the team which first scores 15 points with a minimum lead of two points, but the games must end by the top of the hour with the team in the lead declared the winner. Official game start is at the top of the hour (6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.), but need to start by 10 minutes after the hour. For 9 PM games, please start on time so you will be out of the facility by 10 PM. The Summit closes at 10pm sharp.
Co-ed:
There must be equal or greater number of females to males on the court at all times. The net will be at 7 feet 4 5/8 inches.
Legal ball contact:
The ball must be hit, not caught or thrown. The ball may touch any part of the body. During the first hit of the team, the ball may contact various parts of the body consecutively, provided that the contacts occur during one action. These include contacts involving “finger-action” on the ball and contact with the foot. A fault results from contacting the ball twice in succession by the same player during 2nd & 3rd hits.
Dink hits:
No open handed dinks allowed. Hand must be closed unless setting or striking the ball.
Players’ positions and rotation:
Rotation order as determined by the starting lineup must be maintained throughout the game. Service order must be obeyed and players will rotate one position clockwise when gaining the serve. Players may only substitute when gaining the serve. Back row players must hit the ball from behind the attack line (the line that is about 9 feet behind the net). Players can penetrate under the net provided they don’t interfere with opponent and a part of their foot or body part that crosses over the line must also touch the centerline.
Ball out of play:
If the ball hits the backboard while serving or when in play, replay the rally. The basketball backboards will be left in their normal position during the games. It has been determined that if the basketball backboards are raised up towards the ceiling, there is actually more interference calls during each game. Replay the rally if the ball hits the ceiling or lights and crosses over the net on opponent’s side.
Basketball Backboards:
The basketball backboards that are in the back of the court will be left in their normal position during the games. It has been determined that if the basketball backboards are raised up towards the ceiling, there is actually more interference calls during each game.
Injuries:
If a player is injured, play will stop immediately. Summit staff in accordance with normal operating procedures will treat all injuries for all guests.
Disputes:
Any dispute between teams or players should be resolved as soon as possible. If the players or team captains can not resolve the dispute, the league coordinator will make a ruling.
Referees:
This is a call your own league. If there is a question on a call replay the point.
Protests & Appeals:
All protests and appeals must be made in writing and submitted to the league commissioner within 24 hours immediately following an incident.
